A Guide to Deck Pressure Washing

Once a year, when your deck is finally showing signs of wear, it usually means it’s time to thoroughly clean it. Greenish tinting, the most common sign of discoloration, is a product of moss, algae, and damaged wood fibers from the sun’s UV rays. A good washing can really make all the difference.

When it comes to pressure washing your deck, it’s important to keep some things in mind before you run to the hardware store or rent a pressure washer to give your deck the wash it desperately needs. Pressure washing is fun and all the rage when it comes to sanitizing and cleaning nowadays; however, if you don’t know how to properly use a pressure washer, you can ruin your deck and be stuck with a more costly deck repair

Understanding your pressure washer, knowing the brand, type, and different types of pressure and angles, is vital. Most importantly, knowing why you’re cleaning your deck will make picking the right pressure washer or setting easier; are you removing dirt and debris or are you planning on removing old staining to make room for a fresh coat?

Cleaning your deck should be a regular occurrence; it is recommended that decks should be washed at least once a year. Frequent deck pressure washing prolongs its life and makes that investment worth it. In this article, Billy Deck & Patios LLC will guide you through the process.

The Deck Pressure Washing Process

First and foremost, personal protective equipment is essential. Wearing the proper protective gloves, rubber boots, and goggles will protect you from flying debris and water pressure accidents. Make sure you have the appropriate gear before getting started. Above everything else, your safety comes first.

Prepare Your Pressure Washer

Make sure you’ve chosen the pressure washer you feel most comfortable with. We recommend 1200-1500 PSI of water pressure, but it will depend on your deck type. Hardwood decks can typically withstand more significant amounts of pressure without getting damaged, but composite decks and softwood decks require less force because they are less resistant. Choose the proper nozzle and test it before jumping in headfirst.

Scrub Your Deck

Giving your deck a scrubbing will make it easier for your pressure washer to eliminate the debris and gunk stuck between crevices. Special products are made for wood and deck scrubbing, so make sure you get your hands on one first.

Deck Cleaners

Sometimes, exclusively using water as your cleaning solution works just fine, but there are deck cleaners in the market that will help you with the process. Some even scrub away an old stain coating to make way for a new one. This product by Simple Green is safe to use outdoors and can be used in your pressure washer. Keep in mind that the use of this product is optional.

Using the Pressure Washer

When you’re finally ready to start pressure washing your deck, it’s important to remember that if you’re not careful, you can damage your deck instead of cleaning it. Staying 8-12 inches away from the surface prevents the pressure of the water from creating visible edges or splintering the wood.

Most importantly, keep moving; you do not want to keep the pressure washer pointed at a single spot for too long. This will only increase your chances of damaging that beautiful deck that spruces up your outdoor environment.

Lastly, spray with the grain, not away from it, diminishing splintering from incorrect handling of your pressure washer.

Aftercare

Once you’ve given your deck a thorough power wash, leave it to dry under the sun for 24 hours. After the deck has thoroughly dried, consider sanding the wood; pressure washing might elevate your deck’s wood fibers, and sanding it will give your end product an even finish. Apply a new sealer or stain if desired to leave your deck looking brand-new.

Keep Your Deck Clean!

You don’t need the best pressure washer on the market to keep your deck clean and beautiful, but power deck washing is a perfect and easy alternative for deck cleaning. Using a power washer will ensure that all residues, stains, and dirt are gone from your deck to give it a nice finishing touch. Remember, you must be committed to deck maintenance if you want yours to last a long time.
